Here is what was left of the thermostat and circlip, the seal had grown to about four times its original volume.

Hi, If you look closely at the circlip there was just enough metal left for circlip pliers to get a hold, it was a bit tricky and a small screwdriver in the other hand helped it out. Any more corrosion and it would have been brute force!
